Optical Character Recognition – software that converts a scanned document’s contents into a searchable text layer (in an output PDF) or editable text in files that can be opened in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.

A scanned document is an image, until OCR recognizes the individual text characters and reproduces them in an electronic file.
